Ahhh Charles Darwin would love this as an example of Evolution.......
It certainly throws up some interesting thoughts, but let's keep our fingers crossed that they don't make teh cross over to a life in salt water full time.

Re: Mordialloc Creek Common Carp
European carp have a salinity tolerance up to around 14ppt (parts per thousand) port Phillip pay proper ranges from around 26-39ppt
In mouths of estuaries/rivers this is obviously less. Quite simply the salt water is what is keeping the carp out of the bay.

Re: Mordialloc Creek Common Carp
They would have to compete with all the other fish in the sea that dwell the ocean floor, already doing what they do. Not only that, there would be less delitrious material in the sea than in city lakes, and river systems etc. Carp get flushed out on heavy rains etc. but end up dying if they dont follow the fresh water back up. They take a while though. The benefit they have is they can breath fresh air if need be, but not for too long, so in salty water they move to the surface. The sea is too big for them to take over on their own, too deep as well.
