Ricketts Salmon

Post by Delirium » Sun Mar 12, 2017 6:20 pm

Made up for yesterday's lack of fish.

Found myself in the middle of one of the biggest salmon boils I've ever seen in PPB. Got one picture of it as I approached...but shortly after they just boiled all around....would have half filled a soccer pitch at one stage. There was massive numbers in the school, with 8 or 10 at a time chasing my lures. Donated a few to them too.

Fun

There was one other boat in the area and they had a drone over us and the school. Would have been awesome footage....was right at the most frenzied part of one of the rises. Hopefully it shows up on YouTube some time.

Unfortunately for most of that particular boil I was trying to untangle an angry seagull. After 10 mins of unsuccessfully wrestling with the gull, my partner (who works with animals and wildlife every day and is therefor more patient than me) took it off my hands. The stickbait was still in the water and a decent salmon grabbed it right under the boat. Now she was stuck in an argument with a cranky gull in one hand while she handlined a speedy salmon with the other. Both made it back to their homes.

It took half a tank of fuel and a lot of miles, but eventually found them again today. They were in a very different mood and harder to locate, but extra hungry and angry.

Fished them all arvo and left them biting. Have no idea how many we released, but it was a lot.

That was the case yesterday while they were feeding at the top, but today they were just sitting in a massive school in about 6m of water. Not a bird to be seen.

They were harder to find without the birds, but easier to stay with as they were moving far. Yesterday they were here there and everywhere feeding at the top. You'd find them...pull one fish...then they'd disappear and turn up 2kms away.
