Snapper Slow Jigging Report

Post by TheGreatestGoat » Thu Feb 02, 2017 8:04 am

Hey Guys,

So with a lot of jigging for kings going on it inspired me to do something a little bit different yesterday morning, had some slow jigs lying around which I've never used so thought I would give them a crack on the snapper.

Headed out to the spoil ground for no other reason than never been there are wanted to check it out. Sounded around the bumps and depth contour lines and found some fish within 10 minutes. Marked the fish and then drifted back over. Second drop got smashed, loaded up with weight then nothing. Repeated this process a few times and got boofed at least half a dozen times with no hookup.

Was using 40 gram Slomo jigs. I had my reservations when heading out that the hooks are too small for snapper, the assist hooks look no bigger than a 1/0 and what I suspect was that the snapper were grabbing the jig but hooks not big enough to penetrate the jaw. Also think a drogue would be useful to get a more vertical action on the jigs.

Anyone had any experience with these? Was thinking I might switch the hooks over to a 3/0 or 4/0 size?

Also anyone got any tips for setting an accurate drift line? I nailed it a couple of times but found it really hard to consistently get it right, guess it's just a practice thing.

Anyway, there's definitely a few snapper around out there for anyone wanting to have a crack.

Thats a good report mate.
where is this spoil grounds, ive heard of it before.
one thing i would have tried is dropping a soft plastic down.
the 1/0 hooks should hook up but yeah try some bigger hooks.

Nah I don't think so, loaded up a rod and stripped some line then dropped. Definitely felt like a decent snapper to me

you got those triple hooks in addition to the assist hook or just the assist hook?
cause im pretty sure its only the amberjack type fish that take the lure from the head
