from someone who stands next to outboards all day...the better oils (mercury/quicksilver, yamalube, Etec oils) are the best. They tend to smoke less, smell less and burn better (2 stroke oils)
The cheaper oils smoke more and smell worse.
I use mercury tcw3 in my whipper snipper (i have access to our shop fuel) and after 2 or so years, it clogged up the muffler on it. My brother has the same whipper snipper and uses sthil oil and no dramas (both similar uses)

Sorry I was talking about engine oil not two stroke oil.smile0784 wrote:I been using it for a while now since i bought 4 bottles when on special at bcf a year or so ago for both boats.Nude up wrote:I am not a fan of valvoline motor oil smells like its reclaimed motor oil
Cant really vouch for the smell issue but then dont pay that much attention to it.
I didnt know oil changes exhaust smell changes when it burns up in engine.
Ill start the boat up and see if i can smell the difference.
But is it worth the price difference just for a little smell difference?
Been using it in thw mower, whipper snipper and chain saw with out any issues.
Who else does this?

but what i dont understand is they are all confirming to TCW3 standards or more so how does it end up smoking a lot more than the $$$ ones.
ps anyone in the industry get good discounts on 2 stroke oil, im all ears...

Does it change with change with how the motor uses the oil?purple5ive wrote:ive been told the same, the more expensive ones smoke less.repspec wrote:from someone who stands next to outboards all day...the better oils (mercury/quicksilver, yamalube, Etec oils) are the best. different engines burn the oil differently it would appear...well to me anyway. You can pick a motor thats using less quality oils...and then see a difference once the oil has been changed.
Same with old fuel to new fuel.

There is a difference between oil for water cooled 2 strokes and air cooled 2strokes.
TCW-3 means Two Cycle Water Cooled,the 3 means 3rd generation,ie "supposedly smokeless"
Air cooled 2 stroke motor oils are generally an API and or JASO standard, which from memory is an american or japanese standard for motorbike oils.

Basically it means if the water pump ***** itself on your out board motor and stop's pumping water, take the cowl off the motor and switch to air cooled 2 stroke motor oil and all will be good You'll get home safely and win a darwin award :victory:
