cowes pier

Post by krs.chris » Wed Sep 21, 2011 11:37 pm

did two trips down to cowes last march
1st - got there in the afternoon and used a silver whiting jig for squidies. nailed 5 in the first hour (bait) tick.
sat there all night and had a ball - this pier throws up all sorts. 8am the i n the morning i hit the fish of a lifetime (1.5m big fat gummy). makes it all worth while.
2nd - took a mate down for an all nighter. did the same with the jig but had to wait a while ( nailed a huge squid 40cm hood )
- scored another couple of smaller gummys and a few other large oddballs.
Cowes is a great place for a campout. ( you do need to know the landscape thou ).
il be back next march for sure

I've never had any luck with cowes, with fish that is, never tried for squid. Just hit a million snags n gave up hope. Tried throwing baits off most areas with no luck - seen plenty of others snagged up too.

Need Google to update their maps - might give me some help i guess.

Read a report somewhere about fishint the top right of the pier.... May give it a shot sooner or later.

how far do you suspend your silver whiting under your float there?
and which part of the pier do you get your squid?

It depends Daniel, i sometimes suspend it prob 60cm or even alil lower, it just depends if theres going to be snags out there and stuff like that.

on the incomming tide. go to the lowest platform on the east side.at the end. let it sit down a few meters(i dont put a weight on it). on the outgoing tide - go to just before the main body of the pier and do the same. not many people fish for squid on this pier but it is a haven. if your going to fish the pier i recomend the fresh squiddies. best bait for the large creatures

a general rule for fishing cowes.
on the incoming tide - go to the right hand side of the pier with a surf rod and a large star sinker and put it out as far as you can - let it run a bit.
-
on the outgoing tide - do the same but on the left hand side of the pier.

lots of snags in close - if your game in close fishes soo good - big whiting , flatties, travelly you name it.

first light has always been the most productive. gotta fish the slack tides coz it runs like a mother.

whatch out for the seal - he steals your catch

Forgot to mention - I was down here last Weds - fished from about 9pm-12 midnight when the wind got the better of me and I lost my last rig to a snag. Managed to land one fairly substantial draughty but that was it for the night. There was a bloke fishing the left hand side of the pier and he threw a couple of larger things back - most likely jacksons or draughts.

High tide metting sundown in the coming days so will hopefully have something more exciting so offer....
