Hi all
I’m in two minds of what weight system to use to hold my baits down in the surf.
I’ve ready spider baits or break away with bricks.
I’m not a greeny but I’m not a fan of having line just left out on a rock for the sake of holding a bait.
Bricks and rocks yeah seem ok and natural.
Give a crab a new home but not convinced on leaving line in the water.

Are there some sort of biodegradable lines out there or maybe coo king twine?
What do you guys use.

I don't think there will ever be a biodegradable line, the very essence of fishing line is to be UV resistant and water proof to resist water absorption.
Technology changes at a rapid rate so who knows whats in the future.

most if not all fishos use lead weights mate and I dont think theres biodegradable line out there on the market, at least i havent seen any and id probably be using it if there was some, ive lost a lot of line fishing over the years as I love going to very remote rocky outcrops and drop offs, surf beaches etc to chase serious fish. In my experience mate, best to find a good surf beach that has zero rocks and zero seaweed, so youll never get a snag and lose your line or anything like that, if anything you might snap the line casting hard and lose a lead sinker at the most. If he's talking of using bricks and rocks, I don't think he will be casting baits out. Reads more like big baits, paddled out. Could be wrong though.

I think I understand what you are trying to say here.
Paddled out baits.
Essentially , you want to have something strong enough to hold the brick down but biodegradable ?

Id suggest using coconut rope

Might want to scuff it a bit and it will allow for an easy break off when the fish takes the bait.
It would match the bill for being strong enough to hold the brick down and biodegradable at the same time. :thumbsup:

I posted a reply on my phone at lunch but lost it lol.
yes sorry paddling out baits.
I had a bit more of a goole at lunch also and found this twine.

also I found a place that has biodegrable dog turd bags and nappy bags.
couple of bucks for 30. and in aus
might get soe and sit them in a bucket of water and see how they go.
plan is to fill the bag or bags with sand, then tie the string to the bags and then tie onto the edge of the bait and not the hook.
So in theory shark takes the bait, then tears the string from the bait leaving the sand bag to disappear over time and string.

Just be aware that some of the so-called biodegradable bags just break down into smaller pellets of plastic which can still end up in the gut of fish. You have to be a bit picky about that. Coconut might be better.

cotton is biodegradeable. an old tshirt or similar would make a good pouch for sand. use a paperclip or something similar that will rust away as the weak link on your breakaway system, not the line. that way the line comes back with the rig.

I'm just brainstorming, i've never tried any of the above
