I've been told that the reason eel got a reputation as bait was because it was the cheapest bait the long liners could lay their hands on back in the day, not because it was better than anything else.

{Yeah I think I caught most on flesh baits because that's what I had confidence in, so I used them the most.}

That's really what it all boils down too. Using a bait you have confidence in.

Caught a gummy tonight, thanks for the advice :) Salmon did the damage, not the biggest fish obviously but it beats donuts, released
