anyone have any good suggestions for size braid I should spool onto my new real? cheers :water:

20lb Maxima Mono

I used maxima for years. 12lb fibre glow. Great line. Caught plenty of gummies all offshore in a boat. Now use braid. Mostly 20-30lb. No dramas at all on gummies

20lb will be fine.

What size reel is it?

Land or boat based?

I almost caught a 25+kg gummy on 20lb braid in 50 mt of water just took a long time but leader broke when got twisted around the gaff. Took Over 30 mins. Bit silly i was aiming for flathead lol

Anything is possible.
Slightly heavier ciuld be better

Where are you fishing and what rod and reel are you using?
Westernport has lots of Eagle Rays, skates and smooth rays that will have you fighting for a long time if your gear isn't up to it.
If using braid you will also need to use a mono leader to resist the rough skin of some of the big critters out there, and to give a degree of stretch to absorb some of the head shakes when they get their wind up.

I use 30lb braid because I want to get the things in quickly. If big females, I choose to release them, and the quicker I get them to the boat, the more chance they have of survival.

30lb braid + 2 times rod length of 40lb jinkii shock leader tied with the FG knot. That has been my go to setup for many years. Agree with others that you need a decent line strength to dispatch rays, unsnag sinkers, etc
