Gummy sharks winter or summer best??
Gummy sharks winter or summer best??
What are people's opinions for gummy fishing is summer or winter better. I fish the southern end of ppb. Seems to be more reports during the summer months however that could be because there are more boats fishing. So What are everyone else's opinions winter or summer??

I prefer summer, as warmer water temps tend to produce more activity.

Re: Gummy sharks winter or summer best??
Ive always caught more gummies in winter. July being my best month. Mind you, during early spring im fishing different grounds for snapper and then after the snapper run im fishing for pinkies and whiting.
I fish south end of wp. Gotta put up with alot of swell shark and port jacksons. But if i catch 15 - 20 of them per trip and get 1 or 2 gummies im obviously happy

Yeah maybe it is July. Last night I was at Blairgowrie marina catching 2 squid then this gummy showed up scouring the surface as active as ever. It was about 3 ft long. Didn't have the gear to attempt unfortunately.

Ok so it sounds like I still have a chance of catching them during winter

No real difference. The rubbish fish go from being Couta, rays, pinkies/snapper, flathead etc. in summer months to draughtboards/swell sharks, bearded rock cod, more snapper and the like. Big girls generally come from bass strait in winter would be the only real discernible difference.
The difference in report numbers comes down to less people overall fishing in winter

I always thought winter the big female gummies enter ppb and wp to drop their pups thats why bigger gummies are caught in winter

Biggest one I've ever caught (touch over 6ft) was mid January Nude Up. That same spot at the exact same time of year year after year always gets fish over 5ft
