New beach rod

Post by mazman » Thu Jul 23, 2015 5:29 pm

Hey guys looking at getting a new rod for gummies etc. of the beaches.
My current list of options is:
Shimano aerowave 1303(H) not sure if i would want the heavy or not
Penn prevail 1463
penn prevail 1303

Not sure which of these rods would suit best. I'm happy to put the effort in to learn to cast the 14'er I'm more concerned about the leverage. My preference is currently with one of the penns just i'm not sure which one. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Cheers Alex

when I bought my surf rod, I had one thing I was particularly concerned about and that was the size of the grips to hold onto when casting.
im not a very big made person, and hence found the rods with skinnier butts were easier to hold and cast properly.
granted you cast and forget with these rods, but it still made a difference for me.

another thing is due to this being a surf/gummy rod you don't need the sensitivity like plastics, so just go for what you can afford and are comfortable to cast with, obviously if fishing westernport make sure it can cast the heavier sinkers and baits.

also a 12 footer is a lot easier to handle than a 14.
id just buy a kmart sold penn, abu or okuma branded rods. they will do the job nicely.

Hey Maz,

I got your FB message but i'll respond on here.

Pretty much any of them will do. A forum member i fish with a bit exploded more than on prevail while casting it but other than that i've heard nothing but good reviews.

The aero i haven't fished with but it feels good in the shop.

Cam is selling a 12-20kg 12 foot Tcurve. If i was buying a second long bait stick i'd buy that one.

Thanks doug, now it just depends on cast weights. Will stick to 13' as anything more is a bit much for me. will go the prevail if it has a high enough cast weight if not it will be the heavy aerowave.

I used to have a shimano ballistx pro. 13 ft, 3 piece. Better than the aero wave I believe. Complete Angler have them. Should be able to get one for around $200 or less. Go into your local tackle store and see what they stick. I picked up a 13 ft nano timber wolf rod from complete angler. Never heard of it before but I must say its a tuff rod. Less than $150. Landed me a few good gummies!! :-D
