Targeting my first gummy

Post by trebbalzzz » Tue Jun 09, 2015 10:21 pm

Hey guys

Just like half of Melbourne I went down to Frankston last night and bagged on salmon in a hour, now I would love to go and target my first gummy shark on fresh salmon.

As I have never targeted a gummy I'm not sure how to rig up my line, where abouts to fish and also what time is best, any and all information would greatly appreciated.

Cheers Damian

Fillet the salmon get either a 3/0 or 5/0 circle hook and put the fillet on the hook poke the barb through the flesh and out the scales as it holds better just poke the hook through once that's how I catch em, land based I'd say go down to Tenby point or corrinella. Good luck! Be prepared as u might encounter a ray or two (loose drag)

I've caught one at Somers if you need a spot where the north wind is blowing offshore

Night is better but I've only fished the bay during daylight and caught them.

Would 3 oz pyramid sinker on a paternoster rig with 3.0 or 5.0 circle hooks be alright?

They seem to be more common in the shallow water after dark, they come in with the high tide to scavenge for food.

I caught mine on a 60lb pulley rig with a black magic 5/0 circle and a sliding 3/0 suicide. Just attach strips of whatever to the hooks. Salmon is regarded as the best by most people, but squid, garfish, couta, prawn, carp, and pilchards all work. Cured eel is also pretty popular if the sea lice are around and you need a tough bait.I have 26lb main line, although that might have been a bit light if a big one or a ray came along.

Use whatever sinker lets you cast easily and hold bottom I guess.

Paternoster works well, sinker depends on the current but anywhere from 2-4oz should suit landbased.

I use 5/0 hooks and I wouldn't use anything smaller.
