Those ol timers definitely know a thing or 2.
There is one at a local pier of mine who makes his own. Unusual invention but works very very well!
If the gars are around he will be the first to catch

Yeah, very interesting what they do and come up with.

My Dad used to make his own squid floats, and they looked quite professional. Handed them out to his mates and even some of the decent kids he came across on the jetties.

They do it for a myriad of reasons I think. Satisfaction, keeping the grey matter working and even to exercise their manual dexterity.

Made this guy from a Turnip float from Big W.put a bamboo knitting needle thru middle and use O rings so line can move up and down

Yep, it isn't too hard. We all have floats at home or in our tackle boxes that we tried and weren't overly pleased with. It's all about exactly what you're doing, homework and trying , , , , experiment as you said , , , , and it is all about what works for you. A float I might love, you might hate.
