The bottom one there is similar to the ones I use for gars as well if I’m not using a cork one.

Yeah, very interesting what they do and come up with.

My Dad used to make his own squid floats, and they looked quite professional. Handed them out to his mates and even some of the decent kids he came across on the jetties.

They do it for a myriad of reasons I think. Satisfaction, keeping the grey matter working and even to exercise their manual dexterity.

Thanks for all the information guys, it's surprising how technical float fishing can be. Looks like I've got plenty to experiment with.

Yep, it isn't too hard. We all have floats at home or in our tackle boxes that we tried and weren't overly pleased with. It's all about exactly what you're doing, homework and trying , , , , experiment as you said , , , , and it is all about what works for you. A float I might love, you might hate.
