Making a rod-tube for long-distance / overseas travel?

Hi Guys,

Just looking for opinions on choices for a rode-tube that would be suitable for taking on a plane, chucking about in the bush, etc.

Would need to be about 5ft long and would need to hold about three rods (all 2-piece).

I'm thinking about 100mm PVC pipe for the body, with one end sealed with a simple end-cap and a lockable cap on the other - I'm thinking about one of these (not cheap, but look the business):

Anyone else made their own travel rod-tubes.

Yep, I made a couple for myself and Adtrac.
Dead basic, 120mm waste pipe, glued on cap one end, screw off cap on the other.
The hardest bit was trying to work out the handle, ended up just using a length of old rope, and gaffer taping it on. Works perfectly. These things did the south oz flight, and right across the Eyre peninsula on top of a ute.

Go the rhino end, I have the krs and it needs a padlock seperate and hangs down. Neater set up with the rhino lock

From experience be sure to pack the rods heavily with newspaper in the pvc tube. This will help to minimise damage caused by baggage handlers with limited intelligence.

I also made mine out of pvc pipe. The main trouble I had was the different rules you have to deal with, some of the airlines (OS) had issues with the tackle, knives, scissors ect. some told me I had to take the rods on as hand luggage, most had to go under the plane. Try and find out ahead of time if there are any special requirements. You also need to be careful where you pack stuff, I had a bit of trouble on a return flight, as I was trying to travel light, I had swapped over to a friends smaller suitcase and I packed some lures in the rod tube, which was fine on the way there, but was a problem on the way back (wasn't really thinking it would be that much of an issue when I first packed them, but apparently it was, I didn't want to tell them I had more lures in my suitcase).

Make it out of pressure pipe and not stormwater pipe. It’s far more expensive but too many horror stories of bent tube holding snapped rods.

For 3 rods 100mm pipe is a bit of overkill just use 90mm. Doesn’t sound like a lot of difference but 100mm is a fair bit thicker and heavier then 90mm. There is no way the baggage handlers will bend roughly 1.5m-2m of 90mm pipe unless the jamb it between two steel posts and physically bend it around them... good luck :cheers:

Tell that to the boys that took a dozen custom rods to the hobie worlds in a tube and received them all snapped in half...

Considering the value of the contents throw a bit of money at the quality of the pipe...
