Since this thread has been resurrected from the dark ages - here's another Landing tip and the equipment mainly for kayak fishing off shore a Kage Gaff
( spear gaff )
I made a few up before our trip north earlier this year and I think they work better on the kayak than the Hook Gaffs many are use to - or easier to use

I made them up using 3/8 stainless allthread pointed on the end and that epoxy glued into a wooden shaft with a rope wrapped hand grip section

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i7JF-1sETQ

so far the guys that got them off me have been happy with the results and also landed some good fish with them
so there's a tip for those heading off shore chasing pelagics by kayak
My kayak PBs
Gummy shark 128 Cm - Elephant fish 85 Cm - Snapper 91 Cm - KG Whiting 49 Cm - Flathead 55 Cm - Garfish 47 Cm - Silver Trevally 40 Cm - Long Tail Tuna 86 Cm - snook 64 Cm - Couta 71 Cm - Sth Calamari 44 Cm hood - Cobia 117 cm

All fish can be green lol
Sharks are the worse due to the power in there tails.
Thats why i always carry a 4 by 2 as a bat.
Only use it on fish im keeping otherwise the leader gets cut close to the hook with fish still in the water

you may be right but I can find anywhere than bans it

by Vic regs you can have one Gaff and it doesn't state what kind

and by the regs -- A gaff can be used to assist anglers to take or land fish ( other than invertebrates )
a gaff can only be used with a rod and line or hand line

Equipment not permitted - Barbed flying gaffs or harpoons

so by definition a harpoon is a long pointed weapon with a long rope attached to it that is fired by gun or hand thrown by people hunting whales or large fish

as a Kage Gaff is not a throwing weapon and is used to assist a line caught fish it has to be a legal piece of equipment
