The first rod holder that I used was a fork branch from a river red gum, with the rod resting in the fork of the stick. Since then rod holders have evolved to suit many different applications.

There is the surf fisho,
The pier fisho
The river/stream fisho
The lake fisho
The coarse fisho

Rod holders come in various forms and styles, from the home handy man, to the commercially available types.

These pictures are of rod holders that my father made, it was poly pipe that he pinned to old tent pegs. This suited his fishing from the banks of the Murrumbidgee and at Lake Eucumbene. He lent a few out to people that were never returned. Mostly to people who had already lost fishing rods whilst bait fishing from the shore line.

One moral of the story is either use a bait feeder fishing reel or loosen your drag setting before you loose your fishing rod.

The angle is about 90 degrees, depending on which angle you put the spike into the ground.

This one is commercially available and the rod angle to the water is about 45 degrees. Can be use in circumstances where there is little undergrowth. Like a lake, river/creek. You can angle the rod directly towards the water or at right angles to the water.

This rod holder is powdered coated and comes with it's own bite detector. The bite detector is both visual with a red light, and audible with a buzzer. The angle of the rod to the water is much shallower than 45 degrees.

I think a bloke named Tiny in Queanbeyan NSW made them.

I mostly used them for bait fishing off the banks in the alpine lakes.
