Latex Rubber

Post by Mick.S » Fri Mar 02, 2012 9:14 pm

Looking at making a homemade spear, anyone know where I could find/buy some Latex Rubber locally, i.e Melbourne (10mm)?

Tnx for the info Vinhi, I guess I'm after a slingshot tube which is very hard to find as I believe slingshots are banned in Vic.

This is what I have managed to come up with.
Yet to test this in the water, but it has got some punch to it, as I managed to put the spear through my soccer ball  from couple of meters away.

Am finding it hard to get the accuracy and precision, so will try to improve it. Tried to go for a dive today, to test it out, but the water was way too dirty.

In addition, made a Spearing Pole (not sure if this is what they call Hawaiian Sling??), from a one piece aluminum rod close to 2m in length, with a solid spear tip. Need to learn how to aim and control as the whole thing is heavy.

that spear/gun thing you made looks danerous as hell lol..

guns these days are cheap and come with safetys etc
how do you intend to have the spear sittin in the tube while your underway/swimming? and lets say if you do miss a fish.. is your end of the spear attached to anything so that the spear doesnt travel 50meters away from you lol.

i know it may look alright and could work for you but be safe dude.. the tape and everything just doesnt do it for me,.. bit too dangerous for me lol.

but good luck though your nearly there :) its good fun to experiment with trial and errors hehe

Hahaha....don't worry, this is Work In Progress. I will be re-enforcing everything with the metal ties, and cable ties.

Am working on putting a small reel with braid on it and the braid (80lbs) will be attached to the spear.
The whole thing cost me $15...

If I can spear fish at the 2m range, and actually hit the target, (flatties, pinkie, mullet etc) that will more then enough. Even if it doesn't get used, it was a buzz making it and testing it.

:D! Good to see you're working on you're own spear Mick!
Brave man for heading out in the cold. I was out last Friday... I should have worn 2 wetsuits. Had a 3mm full suit + hood, still felt like I was swimming in a bath tub full of ice.
Barely any fit out there, even used burley - no luck!
Came across a huge school of whiting (around Mornington) but things in the water look bigger than they actually are lol :(
