Wet suit for snorkeling?

Post by CremeDeLaCreme » Sat Nov 19, 2011 12:43 pm

I want to buy a suitable wetsuit for snorkelling in Port Phillip Bay.

Will a 3mm "steamer" be ok?

Would love some information from anyone with experience snorkeling in and around Melbourne.

I don't really want to spend more than $100 as it will only get use in summer.

Thanks in advance!

hay creame,

i rkn a 3mm steamer is ok for just snorkeling but depends what your using it for and tolerance to the cold is.. and how deep you want to go.
like for bigger/chubbier peeps they can last alil longer than me cause im skin&bones lol

i used a 3/2 steamer along with a 2mm wetsuit over that in winter to see how`d i go.. wasnt too bad lol still freezing but i could bare it.

Our waters in PPB are not like those of syd/qld etc where their waters are much much warmer... it also depends how long you want to dive for,.. cause i know that i usually dive for over 5+ hrs to get the most out of it so something like a semi-dry for me is good so it locks the heat in for me and my body temp does not drop dramatically in melb waters.

Ive also looked into investing in the RipCurl H-Bomb heated suit which is a 3/2 but has a coil core heat pack that has 3 stages of warmth incase you feel alil cold while diving, its alil pricey though.

if your willing to spend alil bit more cash then i suggest look on Ebay... cause there might be some blokes out there that want to sell their unwanted suits ;)

All depends.
What times of year? What the day's weatrher is?
Whgat the water temp is? How long yer planning of snorkling for?
What yer own physical build is? Etc.

If your talking about shallow water snorkling suring summer on a reasonably warmish day then a 3mm wet suit is probably going to be fine.
My own poreference is a for a 2 piece suit with 3mm long johns & 5mm top.
Warm weather - just wear the long johns.
Cooler - put the top on also. Gives ya a total of 8mm over ya chest, etc.

Having said that, that option will most likely cost ya more than $100.
My advice would be to look for either a new 3mm long john with the plan of getting a top down the track, or go for a good 2nd hand suit.
