G'day all!

First time, short time...

Ive just moved to Bonbeach and have been looking around for some good spearing spots and was hoping any experienced local spear-os might point me in the right direction?? Its my second summer spearing so am keen to have a real crack this coming summer. I've heard about some man made reefs around Parkdale??

Also wondering if anyone knows if the dive shop on Boundary Rd in Braeside is still in operation? Looks a little rundown...

Just get out and have a go

you can try swimming out from black rock, usually you'll get a few nice flatties. Beware of jetskis though.

If you're just after a swim, there's a marine park further south of black rock. No spearing there, but the reef has a lot of aquatic life so its a nice place to look around

Does it ever worry you that you might spot a shark or even worse, a shark might spot you? I like the idea of spear diving but man I'd be terrified if I could see a shark in the distance with no where to beach myself.

I used to go spearfishing a lot back when I lived on the NSW mid north coast.

My mates and I would go off the rocks and swim out until we got to the edge of the rocks where it would drop off or turn to sand and just check out those areas. If I recall correctly it was illegal to spearfish straight out off the beach, you had to be within 50m of the end of the beach or something. So you might like to check out what the local regulations are before just swimming out at Bonbeach. Also like someone else said watch out for jetski's etc. That side of the bay can be very busy with power boats and PWC so you might consider towing a dive flag along with you (although I doubt 99% of people on a jetski would even know what a dive flag is).

Anyway good luck with it and keep us informed of your dives. Since my trip to Bali earlier this year, snorkelling is something I would love to get back in to later this year when it warms up a bit.

can't say the same for out near the heads and off the back beaches though.

Regulations here - no spearing within something like 100m of a jetty, but nothing about how far out from the beach. Dive flags are great and all but the jetskis don't know what they are so I'd suggest just avoiding places with them or dive close to the shore. Apparently some poor diver in the bay got run over and killed last year by a jetski while he had a dive flag out.

there are dangerous sharks in the bay just not commonly

Great Whites have been spotted in the bay at least as far north as Altona.

well the chances of seeing one while diving are so extremely low that you'd be more likely to be struck by a jetski.

and when it swims that far up into altona everyone knows and runs
