That's just like if you gut hook an undersize fish and it pours out blood before getting back into the water, you wouldn't keep it just because it's gonna die - though it may seem the more reasonable thing to do, you'd have trouble explaining it to the fisheries inspector.

Remember to explain to them that things look 33% larger and 25% closer under water, so a pinkie that looks 28cm is only 2/3 of that size.

Have fun anyway, it's a great sport that I've just gotten into recently and love it. Though last time I was out at Portland a large-enough-to-be-scary School shark came pretty close and I had to decide to shoot or get out of there and I chose to leave him and calmly swim away, not even sure my speargun would have handled him and I didn't wanna **** him off!

on the serious note GS, you must not keep it. If DPI will accept reasons like "it's already dead so I kept it", everyone else will keep small fish and give the same reason everytime they are caught with small fish.

Remember that things under water with a mask on look bigger in ther water than when you see it with no mask on. bout 23% bigger i think.

Some people put a ruler on the bottom of the spear gun to give you a rough size.

worse case if its just under size you can always cut it up for berley to bring in the bigger fish.
cheers cam

Saw plenty of fish my friend! Nice to see a healthy environment in the bay. Unfortunately, didn't spear many! Got a few mullet, need to sharpen my skills :P

You didn't see many to size or just (don't think there is an easy way to say this) couldn't hit the side of a barn! :D
Do any of you underwater people take any pics? There would be some great photos.
thanks
