SP jig head recommendations

Post by ChrisD » Fri Mar 22, 2019 2:52 pm

Just looking for some advise in SP jig heads.
I have gone out and bought 100 2" curl tail grubs, in various colours and wondered what size jig head people would recommend?
Most I look at always look like the kook is massive, compared to the hooks I would use bait fishing.
Location for fishing will of course be long the Yarra, if that makes a difference to the jig head.
Trout & Redfin being the prime targets.

Jig heads have weight size and hook size (and usually hook length also vary).
Choose the right weight for the place you fish. Deeper and moving water means heavier jig head required.
Hook size depends on the plastic you use.

So for example, for pinkie fishing in a 2-3 metres of water using 2.5" zman grub, I'd put 1/8 weight #1/0 hook. But for trout/redfin fishing in 0.5-2 metres of water (lake edge) with 2" grub, I'd use 1/24 and #2 hook.

Boat fishing for flathead or big snapper using 150mm plastic in 10-25 metres of water may need 1 oz 4/0

Hope that helps.

The SP needs to be more than twice the length of the hook - if the hook is too long it will kill the action of the plastic and it wont swim properly. With 2" plastics the biggest hook size I would use is #1, but even that is pushing it. #2 or smaller would be better.

The Tackle tactics Estuary jig head value pack is excellent. Has jig head and hook size recommendation guide on the inside of the lid, range of jig heads in a quality tackle box. Best thing I bought when getting into SP.

I reckon this is over thought a bit. You can catch big fish on small hooks. The weight of the jigheads is usually determined by conditions, light is better. The limiting factor is often your rod, reel, line setup. Go too light and you can't cast 10 feet in front of you. Too heavy kills the action. Some species are more finicky than others, if you're just after flatties then almost anything will do.

Some water conditions just don't lend themselves to SP fishing. Try vibes or floating divers if you're deadset on not using bait.

Assuming they're similar to the 2" grubs zman do I find a size 4 tt sits in them nicely.
For jigheads I find the best way is to match the hook size to the plastic and then the weight to the conditions at hand
