Supermarket bait.

Post by April Fool » Sun Feb 17, 2019 3:42 pm

Hi peoples
I have never been a fan of buying bait. And by bait I mean natural bait as in yabbies and worms. I started to use corn several years ago and then I preferred to grow my own! Of course at times I do buy it as I can't grow it all year round. I have been outfished many a time chasing cod by anglers using cheese. Talking to a young angler last week...her favorite cod bait is kabana! Is it just me or are our fish losing their predatory instincts and turning into fkn finned yuppies who would rather get their food from a supermarket aisle?

One problem I have with using bait that is fit for human consumption is just that...I am likely to eat it myself! My mate told me to try cheap beef devon meat in yabbie nets. I never bothered cos I knew full well that I would eat most of it before I needed it. He gave me a thick slice one day to try in a nearby creek for yabbies. When given to me it was perfectly round and resembled a full moon! By the time I walked about 200 metres from his house to the creek, what was left of the devon looked more like a waning crescent moon (from memory it did work well)!

My question is, what 'bait' do people purchase from a supermarket, and for what fish? Do you buy it for convenience or is it your preferred otion?
cheers

I haven’t used it for ages but we used to use chop tails to catch eels in diamond creek...I suppose it would still go ok

Cooked peeled prawn for Yellowbelly, cheese and chicken for cod, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Chicken breast works a treat for trevally. Chicken thigh is better when they are timid as it's tougher.
I bought a chook from Safeway on sale for 5 bus and caught 20 pinkies and 15 trevally. All over 35 cm
Best 5 bux ever spent

No idea whether I am right or wrong, but I know cheese is also a good shrimp bait in fresh water. I always thought the cheese worked because it attracted shrimp and a nice ball of shrimp is irresistible to cod :)
I am hoping no one bursts my reality bubble
