+1. Woolworths or Coles, fresh from the Deli. One of the best baits you can get, whatever you don't use take home and fry in garlic butter.

Very good bait for gummies however keep in mind depi are urging anglers not to use prawns as bait to try to reduce the risk of spreading white spot disease, though it is not illegal to be using them

Mantis shrimp is a great alternative for gummies when fishing muddy bank areas
I think that mostly applies to foreign frozen prawns

Most of the fresh prawns from supermarkets and mongers are caught locally.

Might be wrong though.

- Where to catch prawns ?

Gippsland lakes are the best bet for prawning without a boat. Just make sure the entrances have opened in the past year. Tyers, Bemm, Tamboon etc.

- how to catch prawns ? I know we need a net but do we need a boat or can we walk in the water and catch them ?

Wade in about thigh deep of water, net in one hand, under water light in the other, net the prawns as you see them. Some are quick to get away (net from behind) but most of the time are pretty lulled in by the light. I usually carry a lunch esky on a strap and when I get around 5-10 in the net I put them in the esky. (Plus beers in the esky too lol) It's important to note prawning is best a week either side of a NEW moon as they will come to the surface. A light night aka full moon the prawns will stay down deep and make it impossible to get them if you're not a netting trawler.

- is it the prawn season?

No. Best months are late summer I've found. January > March.

-is it safe if your catching prawns on foot?

For the most part, yes. In the gippsland lakes I'd say its 99% risk free. More open ports and bays like lakes entrance and port albert probably hold a little more risk with standing on sting rays. It can be a little worrying at times when barefoot but trust me, their is far more dangerous hobbies out there. Get a good pair of waders and you will feel like superman marching through the water.

Answered your questions the best i could.
