Unless you intend on using the rod predominately for lures off a boat I would go something longer than most are suggesting. From the genblacks the slugger would be the pick shimano also have a spec (9' 6-8kg) in some of their rod ranges that would be good too.

thanks guys! I got my eyes set on Shimano Catana CTA902SHORE. i currently hae 30ib braid sitting at home, is that too heavy? or shall i get something less

4000 sized shimano is a little bit too big and heavy for plastics style lure fishing
casting slugs, bait fishing etc is ok.
if fishing off a pier or beach areas predominantly then aim for a 8 or 9 foot rod and use 10-15lb braid
