Yak close call

Post by tracks » Fri Mar 09, 2018 3:15 pm

Well we all know the need to keep safe and abide by boating regulations but some out there just haven't got the message or they just don't care, I launched from the warmies (Newport) pre dawn and quite dark, once I had cleared the breakwater and started to pick up speed and head into the main channel to the Williamstown breakwater I was gobsmacked to see a outline of a dark shape low in the water bugger me a yak with no lights in front of me and to top it off a large cantainer vessel was also coming out behind me, I could not be bothered to give him or her a mouthfull as I would have probably got the same back and I'm over it, guys just a warning to keep a good lookout, I reckon maybe some sort of licencing or marine test for use of yaks in navigational waterways.keep safe all. PS still shaking my head and wondering what would have happened If I had not noticed it.

They are the bike riders of the sea, most of them are great, but then you'll encounter a d*ckhead and it doesn't matter what they are doing wrong, you'll get the blame because you're in a powered boat.

I went and bought a hi vis orange spray jacket at great expense from the local workwear shop to hopefully avoid **** like this. You can see me waving my arms around paddling from miles off, and if I went out at night the anchor light (berly pro orb) would light it up pretty well.

Did you at least get off the plane and give the peanut a decent wake to shake them up?
Yaks or boats, doesn't matter, it's p1ss poor conduct. Happens regularly, especially during snapper season. They deserve to be made into reefs imo for risking their lives and ours. Not good enough.

Agree with all,
If a incident happens in the future I can see a whole legal nightmare for those involved, we don't need more red tape and regulations but surely something has to be done and more policing, I have been advised I could have call Melbourne Port Control and reported the unlit yak, this I will do next time but hope it never comes to that.
