Eel fishing

Post by Jucfishing » Fri Jan 19, 2018 10:03 am

Hi everyone, I’ve been fishing spring creek in Torquay for eels recently and haven’t been having much success. I know they’re there because last night I saw a cormorant try to eat one. Any tips?

Try fishing for them after dark - Keep torch light off the water.

Night time is when they are more active but they are not afraid of light on the water if anything I think it attracts them.

Best bait is beef heart. Nice and juicy with blood but hard to pull off the hook.

With beef heart you can catch them through the day - but the catch rate goes up dramatically on dusk and they bite through the night. They will also bite in daylight if the water is discoloured after rain.

I can second the beef heart. It worked a treat for me in the plenty River one morning. I did find they totally swallowed the hooks, so I had to cut the line each time

Beef heart is also cheap. I bought one, and now I have enough to last a lifetime of eel fishing! :(

The cheap Coles sizzle steak works a treat. Throw some of that on a kl01 hook on a hand line and should be gucci
