Complete beginner fishing the yarra
Hey guys,
So I used to fish when I was young but haven't been for a very long time. I just turned 21 and no am so excited to get back into it!! So basically I just wanted some advice as to where to start. So I would be fishing the Yarra around elthamish and surrounding areas.
1. Is there anything I should look for that would make a good fishing spot ??
2. What sort of rod set up should I run? I was thing line with a sinker and swivel (again I have no idea)
3 what's the best sort of bait to use in the Yarra
Thanks everyone I really apraciate the help

I'd be giving the following a go:
- A 6-8ft medium taper rod
- A small running sinker down to a swivel (say 8lb line) then a leader of about a meter to a size 6 medium shank hook with a scrub worm wriggling on it.
- Take a landing net
- And if that doesn't work, take a tin of corn kernels for carp fishing, and hold on!

G'day - do you have a preferance for what sort of fish you catch and are you looking to target them with bait.
Corn kernals are great for carp, and pretty any section of water will get them.
Compost or garden worms will get you on to most other fish in that section, scrub worms are even better

Late arvo to dusk is the best time and when the macquarie perch come on the chew.
Locations;
Griffith park
Sweeneys lane
Below rapids down the end of Reynolds lane and through the bush
Couple of spots upstream of Fitzsimonds rd bridge
Generally just wander up and down the river side trails looking for spots. Wear stout boots as bank access can be muddy and slippy
For rigs, as above running sinker and as you will snag up a lot I make final leader lighter than main, so just hook breaks off and its a quick replacement. In very snaggy areas shorten leader to reduce hook drifting into snags. Dont bother with paternosters as they are too much hassle with snags
Worms are best all round bait with corn as a back up for when you run out.
Most importantly take your rubbish home

I'd recomend waiting for the flow to subside a bit before you do too much, the river is still running high and fast.Shelvinem wrote:thank you all very much you guys are great I wasn't expecting to get back such great answers so quickly.
