Have you considered a casting lesson? I did a half day one up at Noojee a few years ago and before that I'd never cast a fly rod. They get you casting and catching fish in an afternoon and probably save you learning bad habits. I had used spin gear for trout for about 20 years but these days my light spin gear and trout lures/plastics are all gathering dust. I've found it's a rare outing where I don't get at least one fish on the fly rod. It can seem a bit daunting at first as there is a lot to learn but I reckon it's worth it, I'm even using a fly rod in the salt these days (though with no where near as much success as freshwater).
