I'd say a con - I think the 'selling point' is that it makes the butt lighter (?), but how much does 6 inches of neoprene tubing weigh?

I find them uncomfortable to use, as I often reach for, or grab the butt, expecting a full-length grip, but grabbing only a carbon tube...

I'm there will be other opinions/justifications, but I'd say it's nothing more than a way for tackle companies to sell a few more rods - "It's different, so I've gotta have one!"

There's one born every minute, as the saying goes! :-)

Cheers,

Mike.

Easier to tuck under your arm. But that's about it

I love the look of them, not sure what the benefit is. Tbh, my top end reels are so light that more weight in the butt would balance them better

Split butts are for aesthetics, a little weight saving and saves the manufacture some money ;)

I reckon zero difference to fishing performance though. A shortened foregrip can let you lay a finger on the blank for sensitivity but in my experience the blank between the butt sections never gets touched. I never put my rods in a holder but I understand that's a disadvantage for split but rods in that the blank easily gets knocked around.

Can be a pain in rod holders. But apart from that I don't believe there are any other negatives to split butts. Most of the rods I'll cast all day have split butts. Most of my bait rods have full length butts

I agree with the rod holder. I also tend to find split butts on more lure or light rods and full butts (you cant deny) on larger rods. The split butt makes me nervous when I put them in a rocket launcher as I feel its going to pop out but so far, touch wood, it hasn't.

As a side note I prefer a cork split butt for looks over anything else.
