I think the Poms call Hake "cape whiting". But don't quote me on this.

I don't think poms call hake cape whiting maybe in south africa but in the uk hake and whiting are two different fish.

I've been googling. Found this http://www.gmri.org/news/blog/five-gulf ... out-eating

"Whiting is a flavorful fish that can be prepared baked whole, pan-fried, or broiled. Their tasty, but small, fillets must be handled carefully so as not to overcook.

Also known as silver hake, whiting is harvested in the Gulf of Maine from July to November. Whiting is popular in foreign markets, such as the United Kingdom and Spain, but less known to consumers in the United States. As a result of the low demand for local whiting, New England fishermen only harvested 28% of allowable quota in 2014. "

With a picture of what looks like a hake to me. It doesn't mention "cape" though. However the gulf of Maine is off the coast of cape cod....

and then I found this https://www.msc.org/where-to-buy/produc ... Country=ZA

Brand: Sea Harvest website
Fish: Hake/Whiting
Product type: Frozen
Fishery: South Africa hake trawl

Which tells me it is a type of hake and points back to South Africa.
