In this pic you can seen the evolution of JW rods. The first on the left, 1940s. Next one along 1950s. The third one early fibreglass rod 1960s. The last rod and reel on the right have great sentimental value. My dad caught a huge cod it when I was 4 years old:
This is the cod - my dad is chopping it up into steaks for the relatives with an axe!

Re: Golden Oldies
Makes you wonder why no one seems to bother making the old designs any more. Maybe lures become obsolete when they stop catching fishermen even though they still catch fish.Truedogz wrote:A few more picks:
I made a mistake in my post, I use the old aluminium Crouch with the Stanley rod, not the Crouch 77 which had the fibreglass sides. My Crouch has the slipping clutch (a drag) unlike some versions:
Mitchell spinners. These predate Celtas and work even better. There is less line twist as the two blades spin in opposite directions. Probably the best spinner ever made:
The Plucky lure. These were made by Rublex who made the better known Floppys. The Pluckys tend to hug the bottom and had the reputation in their time of being the best lure for big trout in NZ:

That's some good info ther truedogs! Cheers mate!Truedogz wrote:There are two stages in the fibreglass Black Queen before Boonanza's picture. The earliest had plastic cork protectors and the rubber butt the same as in the photo of my cane rod - not many of them were made. The next version had a similar butt to the one in Boonanza's pic but different labels and runners - stacks of that version were made. Those versions commonly come up for sale on Ebay. There is a similar Erskine de lux on Ebay if wont to see some picks.
The old Black Queens were highly regarded bream rods, being very supple. The only drawback was their weight.

Mate that's awesome and you still have the box as well Was thinking of using my old Diawa again after 15 years sitting in dads garage it still seems to work well.Im not sure if you can still get spares for it though but I'm just happy I've still got it after close to 30 years.

I've got an original Shimano Bantam from the early 80s floating amongst some other old reels and rods. Some original Gary Marsh rods were in the mix with all sorts I can't remember

Re: Golden Oldies
Got a call from my dad saying he dug up one my old boat rods. Its a Jarvis Walker Hawkesbury the funny thing is its a 2 piece rod and the rod join is at the top of the rod grip which probably seems a bit strange.
