After a great first session with JS I was lucky enough to be invited back for another crack.

This time I was casting my own Nitro surf messiah, penn clash 6000 with 40lb tasline. I took the hook off a Busted 75g and was using that, trying to mimick the exact conditions i'd be faced with when i went to go fishing.

Jeremy is extremely patient and an excellent coach, I've added another good chunk of distance and refined my technique to the point where i don't think i'm going to get much more distance without changing gear.

Here's two quick vids, one showing JS' incredible pendulum technique, and the second putting an exclamation point on just how much more distance the refined technique and high quality gear is getting over my off the shelf spin rod.

I've noticed when fishing it's hard to get the right starting position because my pulley rigs are too long and when they touch the ground the hook comes out of the clip. Another trip to Red Point though and I'll need to make some shorter ones.

It'd be a shame if a sinker landed on a good length just before a game, imagine explaining that to the groundsman

Now that i'm comfortable with the overhead thump i'll do another fortnight drilling that then try to learn the OTG cast i think.

You can't use a clipped type rig and do an off ground cast, it only works with a pendulum where the rig is tensioned all the way through the cast. I prefer the off ground as Im much more consistent so I keep my hook lengths shorter when I need the distance. Times have changed with gear, I got my 200 yard badge back in the 80s but with the longer lighter rods you can get that with a much slower cast these days and its much more achievable with a bit of practice.

I wonder what gets better distance, a bad overhead thump with a streamlined pulley rig or a decent OTG with a paternoster?

It will largely depend on the size and shape of the bait along with the weight of the sinker.

Doug glad that you enjoyed the session it was good getting out and putting a few leads down and very happy with your progress especially with your Nitro.
