How do you rig your gear?

Post by scott__henning » Tue Jun 09, 2015 10:00 am

Just got back from bermagui, had a crack at some yellowfin but that was a miss, luckily the kingies fired at montague so we came home with a full esky.

But I did lose a few jigs in the process, and I know it's because I'm lazy with how I set up rigs. We busted off on what would have been a 15-20kg Kingie because of poor rigging, and I'm determined to not let that happen again.

So for example, how does everyone rig jigs and lures?

I've been told a good method is with a swivel and split rings, but I'm yet to try it.

Bimini to a no name knot, leader to split ring, assist hook attached to the split ring, use pliers to change jigs but you'll need good pliers to change the split ring
(owner 80 pliers) never trust tying to the lure. I don't use a swivel but some do.

For smaller fish, leader tied to snap swivel using improved clinch knot then clip to jig.

For larger fish with heavier leader I use a heavier snap swivel and use a crimp for the leader then clip to the jig.

Snap makes changing jigs quick and easy.

Braid to leader for light I use modified albright for heavier gear I use hollow braid pressure serve combined with a pull on system for the hollow to solid braid connection.

You don't find that the snap swivel effects the motion of the jig?

Not that I have noticed, but it might depend on what action you are trying to use.

Jigs for kings are pretty big I often use 7oz jigs.

Sounds like an ace trip. Did you have any problems with seals?

Seals didn't bother anyone from what I can see.

Not sure why they didn't, perhaps there are a few sharks Around now that keeps em in the shallows?

I've never done it this way. However a kingy charter I went on a few months ago the charter operator had the solid ring with the short assist hook tied onto all outfits and changed jigs using split rings onto the solid ring. Was very fast and efficient as well as being pretty tidy.

Exactly like ducky said, I forgot to mention the solid ring.
I think snap swivels are fine for snapper/ flathead rig or similair but I wouldn't risk it opening on a fish of a lifetime especially after how much effort you've put in to get to Eden or similair.
Just my thoughts. CheersImage

For reference snap swivels are also used used for much larger game fish ie marlin and tuna.

The standard termination of the windon leader is crimped to a snap swivel.
