Where did you get your gear when you first started fishing

Post by Kev209 » Wed Jul 30, 2014 10:03 am

Most of my gear was hand me downs when I first started fishing. Then I started work at 14 and could buy my own gear, the local Barber and Coles were the only places you could buy limited fishing gear close to where we lived in the northern suburbs.
My sister lived not far from Station Pier so I spent a bit of time their, I would go to the local fish and chip shop a couple of days before I went and he would bundle up a nice little package of scraps for bait Free and the bait blokes were always on the pier with their hoop nets and hunks of boiled potatoes, 10 bob could buy enough blue bait to do you a week.
The best time to fish the pier was when ships were docked as they through their garbage overboard and it was the best berley ever.

The local second hand shop, a rod with a broken tip for 1 or 2 bucks was quickly repaired. One of dad's old reels stripped and fixed and away I went. Go dig some worms and it was on! Reddies at the local creek were the target.
My hobbies are fishing and golf, I guess I just like frustration..

A JW little Jim 1 piece solid glass with metal guides and a Coles bought egg beater was my first boat rod (if I remember right it had a wooden but)

My dad's old Jarvis walker combo. Don't know where from. Was about 35 years old and had been sitting gathering athering dust. Since then I've upgraded a bit but most of my gear is still Kmart combos because don't have enough money and to young to get a job :(

There used to be a little sports shop in the main street of greensborough, and the back corner was a little fishing section. Guess I am showing my age there :)
That is where I used to get my first gear, spent many hours there dreaming of getting bigger and better gear. Back then however pocket money didn't stretch far and I was only chasing roach and eels in the plenty river.
