Hand me down's from my grand dad's & dad.
Buying hook's n sinkers from the local hardware store was probably my first purchases as a kid, after everyone got sick of me losing there's.

My first rod I found on the Gem Pier in Williamstown 50 years ago. It was a bit buggered but I used it until my old man bought me one, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

My first rod and reel i got from my dad, was a ugly stik clearwater i believe with a okuma 6000 size baitrunner.
although i was using my dads old gear before he got me that.
First rod i bought myself was a jarvis walker redbone combo, i don't know what happened to it, i think i left it at howqua somehow.
And the first tackle box was brought and filled by my dad also.

Re: Where did you get your gear when you first started fishi
Never even thought about tackle, I remember climbing a tree every time I saw some line hanging out of it, that took care of sinkers and swivels, even scored the odd hook or ondex or hogback that I could re use. It was a great day when you saw a floppy floating past, or the rare and elusive flatfish lure. I still have one of grandpa's rod and reels hanging on the wall, an aerial off a WW2 tank, yes steel! I guess I am not the only family member who fished with what I could make/find. I still struggle with spending the dollars on "good brand" gear, I have a couple of nice combos that I spent quite a bit on, but the fact remains my cheaper gear works just as well, and I have never lost a fish due to a rod or reel failing.....
My hobbies are fishing and golf, I guess I just like frustration..

Hehe, great story! Trust me though, when you do lose a big fish to gear failing, it makes it a lot easier to spend the moneyBirdman wrote:Never even thought about tackle, I remember climbing a tree every time I saw some line hanging out of it, that took care of sinkers and swivels, even scored the odd hook or ondex or hogback that I could re use. My fathers original boat rod was made from a fencing foil, had a wooden butt, and porcelain guides. I was told by a collector that rods made from tank Ariel and fencing foils were common in the early days, and if your lucky enough to have one in good condition it's worth big bucks.
