Hi fisho's & hope everyone is going well.
In town for the weekend with some mates for some leisure fishing of a pier (least messy) and staying in Carrum, Bayside Melbourne.
Was chatting to a few locals and suggestions were mixed between Mordialloc Pier and/or Dromana or Rye pier. Looking to land some Pinkies, whiting or trevally/kingfish even and would like your opinions based on current weather, moon phase and what's biting hot where? Both these locations are exactly within 35 mins of where we're staying so distance is no issue.
Also suggestions on:
- What location on the recommended pier is the best
- What live baits are popular? presuming standard Pilchies, squiddy heads, blue bait, chicken?
- What plastics are good, brand name & size (can grab some from the local Gone Fishing store).
- Finally the pier should be relaxed and not a carnival
Need help with picking Mordialloc Pier or Dromana/Rye pier this coming weekend

End of the pier at Mordialloc can be productive, there's also a deeper patch out the right. South or Southwesterly tend to be the better winds with Pinky's a chance this time of the year. I'd be fishing baits (Pillies & Squid) on a paternoster or running sinker.. You do get the odd Salmon schools swimming by as well, any metal lure should do the trick if they are feeding..
Out towards Dromana/Rye is where your more likely to find your Whiting, Squid & Trevally.. Size 2.5 or 3 size jigs should get you started for the squid and lighter setups (whiting snatchers) should help you get onto the other species - Pippie's and Tenderized Squid would be my bait of choice.
Its fairly unlikely you'll encounter kingfish landbased anywhere. Worth noting that all the piers can be a little hit and miss + they will get busy, specifically on weekends and hot days..
Good Luck

Hi! Welcome to melbourne!
A good option is to just try all the piers in port phillip pay if you have the time: start at williamstown, fish for about an hour and if you dont get anything move to docklands, then to princess pier, then to st kilda pier, then to brighton pier, then to sandringham pier... ect you get the idea. If you run into something then stay until the bite goes off. Make sure you get a fishing license, and don't forget about bag limits and minimum sizes.
Use whatever you have, but if you think you will be staying here for a long time it might be worth it to get a decent rod/reel setup. Bait I like bluebait, pilchards and squid - the stuff from fishmongers are usually what I use. Lures are also worth a shot.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
