How many rods do you take when you go fishing?

Post by smile0784 » Fri Jul 21, 2017 12:51 am

I remember getting pulled up a long time ago at lake eucumbene for having to many rods on the boat.
Even tho some were set up in the horizontal rod racks.

He cautioned us.

Normally we have 2or 3 each either in the vertical rack or out in the 3 ways.

And 1 or 2 on horizontal rack for if something big comes along or rigged up ready for if hot bit can just swap rods instead or spending time re rigging.

Just doing a quick survey on how many rods do people take out when fishing?

I seen boats with 1 or 2 people on board going out with 8 to 10 rods all set up for snapper rigs. Do they use all the rods at once or have spares set up like i do.

I need to fit more rod holders to my rocket launchers.

If I am landbased going for squid or salmon, I have one rod only.

The freshwater rule in NSW I believe, is that you can have as many rods as you like, but not more than 2 can be set up. I have been cautioned as well.

If I am snapper fishing, I will have 4 rods out. On hot bite, that can be too many rods to handle. I find that too many rods out when bait fishing can mean a lot of tangles.

If I am trolling for tuna, I can run 6 rods, but it is awkward so stick with 4.

I used to take heaps out with me when I first started fishing, now I've realised it's a lot more effective to have just a couple of rods to pay close attention to than heaps of rods that have no bait half the time.

For landbased beach fishing with bait I take a 2, lure fishing I take one.

In the yak it depends but I'll have between 2 and 5 different setups with up to 3 in the water at any given time.

Snapper fishing usually we have 8 rods (6 stray lines out the back and two paternoster rigs over the side) along with 4 lighter rods for squid, soft plastics etc.

So 12 usually.

Landbased fishing I usually use 1 to 2 rods, for boat fishing 2 to 4 rods.

i must be doing something wrong then for sure.
i got out with 1 rod loll. sometimes i take the squid rod as well
if 2 people then 2 rods, 3 people 3 rods.

when fishing for bream i have 3 different actioned rods rigged with 3 different types/styles of lures. maybe i should follow a similar proceduere for the bay and have 2 different types setup

when i was fishing landbased also 1 rod.
