give portsea a go i went 2 weeks ago for squid then lost my last jig to a ray :/ didn't feel like goin home so i rigged up for whiting. No bites on squid or pippies so i thought ill try some of the whitebait i had and within 5 minutes i landed my first kgw with another 5 to follow, all 40cm +. This was after dark

If you end up in Sorrento, I was diving there not long ago and saw some fat 40cm+ KGW, within casting distance of the pier/jetty.
But since you mentioned Portsea, you're better off heading there as it's closer to the mouth of PPB

Use squid caught anywhere from Portsea down to Rosebud, cut into small strips = King George Whiting in the same areas.

Also worth noting, after dark they come in quite shallow (less than 1 meter of water and can be caught from the beach land based) :reel:

so after a failed effort of nearly 16 hours of fishing all we got was 2 banjo sharks and a toadfish... somehow the whiting and snapper evaded us lol
quiet dissapointed to be honest
we tried mt martha, mornington pier and franston pier for donuts
might go down to wpb next time.

cheers

Should use paternoster rigs or even buy one of them whiting rigs and replicate that. I reckon the red tubing and beads do make a difference

Doesn`t make that much difference tbh..I use a simple running sinker rig, works fine for KGW....and pinkies, and banjos, etc, etc...

Carl..
