I think the prawn run usually starts about mid December. Probably still a bit early but every year's a bit different.

Use lighter braid. I used to have the same problem trying to cast with mono line. Switched to braid (15lb - coz I didn't know any better) and instantly casting distance went up heaps. Then I went down to 8lb and I can confidently say that casting distance has doubled vs mono.

If you are just after flatties, then simple solution is slide a ball sinker above the jig head or use a running sinker rig. Metal blades work really well in Docklands, and so do small sinking hard bodies like the strike pro micro vibes. Maybe give them a go. Otherwise when the Yarra is flowing too much you can walk over to Docklands, I've caught more in the docks than the Yarra.

The docks bream usually fire up a few days after heavy rain. They will hang around the bottom this time of the year, used to do really well on them with metal vibes teabagging the pylons after dark. My best sessions have been when the water is like coffee
