Congrats on the purchase. Did you buy new or second hand? I had the opportunity to cruise around in a 2018 outback this year and it was a heap of fun.
Went new - had been keeping my eye out on used listings but hadn't been able to find one that I liked.

Re: Splurged on a yak

Congrats! Like mazman mentioned, check a nice calm low wind day, say 15kmh or less. Get all the safety stuff too. Very important. Someday this summer I will practice re-entry. I've fished fisherman's beach couple times on my yak, a good spot to fish on a yak, no need to travel too far off the beach...

Re: Sashimi Possibilities

Give this a watch so you get an idea of what/how things are prepared. Gives you an indication of the types of fish that are being used, and then you can go ahead and draw some comparisons between the fish he's got there and what we have available here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoktpjjCLdM In ...

Re: Snapper + Whiting trip

For snapper, maybe mt martha. Start early morning with the high tide. Rye for squid and whiting, they can bite anytime. Check the wind and tide. Mt martha can get a bit rough. I think rye has less tidal movement, but can be crowded being its still school holiday. Either way, good luck! Yeah - I wan...

Mt Martha - 14/01 - Kayak

Went out early in the morning, aiming to be on the water by 6. Plan was to chase some snapper with some squid/soft plastics, then head in for squid/whiting. Launched from the south end of Mt Martha beach, and paddled about 3.5km out to about 20m of water. Heaps of bait fish schools passed along the ...

At least you got some and not a donut.
Coronet bay seems steady producing whiting. St Leonards too and Werribee. I guess anywhere with weed bed sand holes can produce whiting. Burley is essential. I use gotcha burley pellets. Makes a big difference.
Haven't had a donut day in the kayak yet!

Re: Looking for whiting from the Yak

So ended up at Sorrento, paddled back and forth between the ferry pier and blairgowrie marina on the hunt. Dropped 2 good sized squid, and couldn't really find the whiting but ended up popping my KGW cherry - 35cms.

Ended the session with 7 squid, fishing from around 8-1:30

Re: Donuts at Mt Martha

Hey crew. Had another go on Saturday. Up before 6am and off to Mt Martha. Nice and quiet and isolated so no problem keeping my distance from anyone. Bit windier with a light southerly, and overcast so a little less pleasant than last time. Wife was with me, she lost a jig in the reef there somewher...
