I thought the key was for the hook to stay in the fishes mouth .... till landed.

As the water temp cools down .. so does the action (activity of fish), another thing to keep in mind. It may not be that your doing something wrong, its just its not the time of year for it.

Canuk, Flathead are predatory fish, which mean they ambush! Jump on Youtube and watch some footage of how flathead behave.
