personally i think if you're going to be fishing the docks with bait the most productive way is to drop an unweighted prawn down the pylons and move frequently, Lures is a whole different can of worms but a fun one at that

Bream are ok to eat, not the greatest though. I tend to avoid them because of how slow growing they are. This means they have a lot of time to collect the heavy metals that are scattered through most metro rivers and in systems that aren't full of heavy metals and I generally C & R anyway

just re read your post, chances are all you need is for your aird to be serviced and everything will be good again if not you would be better off spending less.

Is there any advantage in getting a longer version of that model of rod (say a 12ft or something) in terms of casting distance, general fish-ability etc? No. You might get a longer cast out of a 12 but they are kinda clumsy and hard to handle. Also, unless you're stupidly well conditioned, casting ...
