Re: Lost something massive this afternoon
No, just a single 3/0 circle hook. I've caught plenty of mulloway before - if this was one, it must have been over 20kg. Whenever I've caught them previously, though, they absolutely scream away - this was a slow and powerful run on heavy drag. Honestly, it felt more like a large stingray - but that...

Lost something massive this afternoon
I spent my 2 hours of exercise on the mulloway hunt this afternoon (in my usual haunt on the Yarra). I had caught 2 pinkies around 35cm and was running down the clock in my last half hour, when one of my rods received some light bites. Once there was a small bend in the rod tip, I leaned back on the...

Re: pumping worms for bait
I used to get sandworms at the Patterson River - not sure what condition the river is in these days, though.

Re: chasing bigger cod
I catch a lot of cod in summer - most between 60-85 cm, and almost never any below that. My only tip would be to fish hard up against structure (rock or timber). I use baitrunners, but pretty much lock up my drag for the hook set, because they will be in the snag at that point.

Re: Fishing orbost advice
Blue bait has worked for me there, with a cast of 20m ok from the beach or just 5-10m off the jetty. Put on a small live mullet to increase your chances - you can also get mulloway with this technique. The only problem can be the very large eels that are in the system - you'll probably catch 3 of th...

Re: Fishing orbost advice
The jetty is excellent - better if you bring some live prawns, but plenty of big bream, mullet and perch hang out around the pylons at the turn of the tide, and flathead directly out in front.

Re: Fishing orbost advice
Motts Beach is a pretty good place to walk the shallows for flathead - or just off the beach at the "front" at Marlo (just east of the jetty).

Re: Handling Mulloway
Yes, avoid the mouth of a mulloway at all costs - the teeth are super sharp and will give you a very nasty cut, particularly if the head thrashes while you are holding it with your thumb.

Re: Anyone finding mulloway recently?
I had a go during the daytime on the Yarra landbased this week. It was cold and there were no mulloway, but I managed to pick up a 60cm snapper for my trouble. That's a 3/0 circle hook in the corner of its mouth:
