Re: First fishing report
Make sure you are bouncing the plastic off the bottom as you are slow hopping it back towards you. I don't think they were getting to the bottom. Had a 3.5 zman minnow plastic with a 1/6 2/0 jig. Maybe too small? Or was I being too impatient? I was flicking the rod up a couple times every few reels...

Re: Pink pink no ting ting ... Campbell's Cove.
The micro pinkies can be a lot of fun if you're using very light gear -- e.g. the sort of stuff you'd use on bream or trout.

Re: Frankston South
You can spin for salmon off the Frankston Pier. Might be worth checking out the beach at Davey's Bay, too. Mornington is also a short drive. Balnarring and Merricks aren't too far away if you're interested in gummy sharks.

Unless I'm able to pick up a replacement top half, I don't think I'll be replacing this with another Raider.

Re: So, that was an expensive trip to the pier ...
Casting. The lure is within the casting range of the 'egi' model. I wasn't casting a brick, by any means. The break was clean. You'd think someone had cut it. EDIT I remember reading that 'old' Raiders were prone to snapping, but I believe mine was one of the 'newer' ones. For what it's worth. I mea...

So, that was an expensive trip to the pier ...
To cut a boring story short, I managed to kill a Shimano Raider. I don't think I was doing anything stupid -- indeed, I don't recall breaking a rod before, and my go-to rod is a far more delicate creature -- but there you have it. It snapped right below the bit that joins to the other half. That oth...

Re: Soft Plastics
Perhaps it's a time-invested thing, but I've had more luck on soft plastics than I've had on bait. My success rate on plastics climbed a lot once I switched to light jigheads -- maybe a 1/12 oz on my Raider, and gram-or-so models on my Itchy Twitchy. The much-hyped Z-Man Motor Oil is very good, but ...

Re: Soft plastics technique
When you say 'light', what do you mean? I do most of my soft plastics fishing with my Gen Black Itchy Twitchy, and I can feel most everything. 4 pound leader. I put my finger on the line out of habit -- all that childhood advice dies hard -- but I don't need to. Everything sloth said is good. I'd ad...

Re: Fav all round rod.
I fish land-based exclusive, and rarely target larger critters. My go-to rod used to be a Raider squid rod, but I'm increasingly using my Itchy Twitchy for most everything. It's 'all round' for my needs.
