Re: Spearfishing Blairgowrie

Far right side of Koonya beach has some nice reefy ground with fish.

Watch swell and conditions though, I'd only recommend it if you know how to read conditions, and handle yourself in current and swell.

Third vote for them, bit of a drive for you but certainly worth it. Mick is a great source of knowledge and always takes time to chat and give bits of advice as well. Huge wall of lures too!

Re: Swains Reef check list

Heavier leader for sure. I run 180lb to cast for GTs and 200lb for doggies, both in case the fish pull you into the reef and you need abrasion resistance.

Re: 4 new outfits

I’m thinking of subbing out the Bone OceanThug medium casting rod for something a little more affordable. Other options are: -Murasame Caranx PE2-5 stick bait 80 ($429) -Daiwa 20 Demon Blood s702-3/5 ($389.00) -Shimano Anthem 20ASW692SPMH 30-50lbs ($277.11) Anyone got any personal reviews of either...

Re: 4 new outfits

Do you mean the one with the phantom rod outfit? Yes. The phantom and crucis. So just a phantom rod with a 10k gosa for both applications? 5.7 isn’t to short to cast with? Yes, because you already have the Bone ocean thug for casting. I'd just combine the bait/jig/troll into one outfit with a short...

Re: 4 new outfits

The medium bait and overhead/jigging do seem to overlap. You could actually get away with one setup for all those applications. No need for a long 7 foot rod for those areas. The shorter ones are easier to control fish and also easier to land fish close to the boat. Do you mean the one with the pha...

Re: 4 new outfits

Just my 2 cents, butf you choose to go down the 14kxg path as well, you also have the option of picking up aftermarket spools. To my knowledge SOM and Maxel make a 16000 size spool that fit the 14k reel, so you have the xg as well as a bit more line capacity to put on probably thicker line. Also, yo...

Re: 4 new outfits

Done a few of these live aboard trips, from GBR to Vanuatu and PNG. I generally take 6 setups with me, PE3,5 and 8-10 in casting and the same in jigging. Have had a bit of experience with all the gear but it’s highly dependent on how you use it as well. No point taking a big rod and reel that you ca...
