Stony Point

Had my first post lockdown crack this afternoon. Had thought the wind may spark the snapper up a bit, managed two 30cm flathead but nothing on the big baits. Saw one big squid caught, but not much else. Was really blowing right on the nose, but still quite a few boats out braving the waves.

Re: Dominant side, cast and retrieve preference

In the uk sea anglers cast and wind right and freshwater anglers wind left. My theory on this was fishing from a boat in deep water with heavy leads you didn’t want to spend time winding in with your weaker hand.

Re: UL Reel and line tangle problems!

When you have retrieved, just leave the lure hanging for a second or two. This allows the line twist to reverse out before you recast. I never fish that light when I lure fish, but use 10lb mono when spinning off the beach and don’t have line twist or wind knot issues.

Re: Do you target Australian Salmon?

Love catching them on super light tackle. Float fishing for them off the rocks is my favourite way of fishing.

Re: Cost effectiveness

I think maybe Dougies point answers the cost effectiveness argument, certainly land based. There are lots of reels with smooth drag than safely put out more stopping power than I can use. At least I can still blame my gear when I get done by a big fish. Would have caught it if I had a Stella😂

Re: Cost effectiveness

It’s interesting the amount of drag these expensive reels can produce. When you are fishing land based with longer rods you would be surprised how little drag you can exert. I tried this on a spring balance with my 14ft surf rod, maximum I could impart with braid was 3.5kg and mono was barely 2kg (w...

Re: Cost effectiveness

Being fairly tight when it comes to spending money I have a slightly different angle on this. I have some expensive gear, one of my surf combos is worth well over $1,000 but I don’t always use it, because whilst it’s fantastic to fish with, a lot of the places I go and how I fish I’m to scared I’ll ...

Re: Travel rods - budget vs premium?

I've got a Paul Worstling nano 9ft 4 piece that bangs out a 60gm slug. I've got a Shakespeare Agility EXP thats a 11ft 6 and 5 piece that can cast 200gm, this would cope with anything up to a reasonable shark and then a Shakespeare slingshot 7 ft 5 piece (2 tips) thats good for the lighter stuff but...

Re: Need a estuary/hiking rod

Ive got a Shakespeare slingshot 3 piece 7ft travel rod, cost $50 from Tackleworld. Its caught snapper, rat kings, decent salmon and even big bream. Pretty good bit of kit.
